The Amylase test analyzes the amount of amylase in your blood or urine. Amylase is an enzyme, or a special protein, that helps to digest food. Most of the amylase is made in the pancreas and the salivary glands. The small amount of amylase in your blood and urine is normal.

Chronic pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas that gets worse over time and can lead to permanent damage. The Urine Amylase test: Helps evaluate pancreatic and salivary gland disorders. An amylase urine test may be done along with or after an amylase blood test. One or both types of tests may be used to measure the amylase levels in people who are being treated for pancreatic or other disorders. The evaluation of amylase in urine is used as an indication of chronic hyperamylasemia, to exclude macroamylasemia, and in the detection or exclusion of renal insufficiency and diabetic nephropathy.
