A hepatitis B (Core) IgM antibody test is performed to detect and diagnose hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. These tests look for IgM antibodies in your blood and help to determine if you have currently been infected with the hepatitis B virus.
It is recommended: If you have any symptoms of hepatitis like nausea, dark-colored urine, fever, loss of appetite, etc., or if you are suspected of being in contact with HBV. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness. Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, muscle aches, jaundice, yellowed skin and eyes, belly pain, swelling, and confusion. This is in extreme cases.
The Anti-HBc IgM test: Used to find out whether you are actively infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The HBV has a central core and a surrounding envelope. That means your immune system makes IgM antibodies to the core of HBV during the active stage of infection. These hepatitis B core IgM antibodies begin to appear in the blood several weeks after you are first infected with HBV.
