What is the Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (IFA) test?
The Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (IFA) test is analyzed to detect the presence of anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) in the blood. This test helps to evaluate primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a disorder that affects the bile ducts. The Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) are the antibodies that form against mitochondria. The mitochondria are a very important part of the cell, being the energy sources inside the cells that help the cells work properly.
When is the Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (IFA) test recommended?
It is recommended in:Patients who exhibit PBC symptoms which include itching, jaundice, enlarged liver, abdominal pain, etc.
What does it measure?
The Anti-Mitochondrial antibody (IFA) test: Analyzes and measures the amount (titer) of AMA in the blood. The Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) are autoantibodies that are strongly associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), formerly called primary biliary cirrhosis. Primary biliary cholangitis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts inside the liver. This is a slow-progressing disease that causes and worsens liver destruction and blockage of bile flow. Blocked bile ducts can lead to a build-up of harmful substances within the liver and may eventually lead to permanent scarring (cirrhosis).
