What is the Bile Acids Total Test?

The Bile Acid total serum test is used to analyze and evaluate the normal functioning of the liver. These Bile acids help in the absorption of food during digestion. They are synthesized in the liver and secreted in the intestine to break down the fat of the ingested food.

When is the Bile Acids Total Test recommended?

 It is recommended: To evaluate hepatobiliary diseases such as acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver sclerosis, liver cancer, and intrahepatic cholestasis during pregnancy. The elevated levels of total bile acid could be due to the inability of the liver to extract bile acids from the blood.

What does it measure?

    The Bile Acids Total test: Measures the levels of bile acid in the blood. This total bile acid is metabolized in the liver, and hence can be used to evaluate the normal functioning of the liver. The cause of the elevated levels of bile acid, total, is due to the inability of the liver to extract bile acids from the portal blood. The efficiency of the hepatic clearance of bile acids from portal blood maintains serum concentrations at low levels in normal people. The elevated fasting level due to impaired hepatic clearance is a sensitive indicator of liver disease.
