What is the Calcitonin test?

This test analyzes the level of calcitonin in your blood. Calcitonin is a hormone made by your thyroid; a small, butterfly-shaped gland located near the throat. Calcitonin helps to control how the body uses calcium. It is also a type of tumor marker.

When is the Calcitonin test recommended?

It is recommended:

  • In case of the following symptoms of thyroid disease: a lump in the front of the neck, swollen lymph nodes, pain in the throat or neck, and trouble swallowing.
  • To diagnose C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid cancer, determine treatment efficacy, and monitor recurrence of thyroid cancer.

What does it measure?

The Calcitonin test is:

  • Analyzes the amount of calcitonin in the blood.
  • The functions of calcitonin in the human body are unknown; what is known is that it is a hormone produced by C-cells in the thyroid. The calcitonin hormone is secreted by the thyroid gland, an endocrine gland (a hormone-secreting gland) located in the area of the throat, against the windpipe. The special cells, called C-cells, present in the thyroid gland secrete calcitonin.
  • Mainly used to screen, diagnose, monitor, and evaluate the response to treatment for medullary thyroid cancer (a highly cancerous, spreading form of thyroid cancer).
