Carbamazepine is a drug that is used to treat certain seizure disorders (also called epilepsy) but is also prescribed to stabilize the moods of people with bipolar disease. It also eases alcohol withdrawal and helps alleviate some types of nerve pain. For treatment purposes, carbamazepine can be prescribed by itself or in combination with other antiepileptic drugs.
It is recommended in: Signs and symptoms of carbamazepine toxicity such as drowsiness, slurred speech, ataxia, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, oliguria, blurred vision, and bullous skin lesions.
The Carbamazepine test: Measures and monitors levels of carbamazepine in the blood. This can determine whether the drug level (carbamazepine) is within the acceptable range. This drug is mainly used to treat specific seizure disorders (also called epilepsy). The test may be performed when a person is not responding to treatment and has a recurrence of symptoms like seizures, nerve pain, or bipolar mood swings. Carbamazepine tests are ordered constantly at the initial stages and later at regular intervals, as and when required. It ensures that the blood concentrations are maintained.
