What is the Cardiolipin Antibody (Phospholipid) IgG test?

This test is to check for the presence of anticardiolipin (ACL) antibodies IgG produced against cardiolipins responsible for blood clotting. ACL causes abnormal blood clotting in multiple body parts, and its elevated amount in the body is an indication of an autoimmune disorder called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).

When is the Cardiolipin Antibody (Phospholipid) IgG test recommended?

It is recommended:

  • In the case of a person having multiple unexplained blood clots (thrombotic episodes) in a vein or artery.
  • In the case of a woman having had recurrent miscarriages, especially in the second and third trimesters.
  • In such cases, symptoms are more consistent with autoimmune diseases.

What does it measure?

The Cardiolipin Antibody (Phospholipid) IgG test:

  • Analyzes the levels of anti-cardiolipin IgG antibodies in the blood.
  • These Anti-cardiolipin antibodies are autoantibodies that are produced by the immune system. They have mistakenly targeted the body's own cardiolipins, which are substances that are found in the outermost layer of cells (cell membranes) and platelets. The body has the ability to regulate blood clotting and is affected by these autoantibodies.
  • Cardiolipins are lipid molecules that play a very essential role in the process of blood clotting. These anti-cardiolipin antibodies target the cardiolipins, which can result in an increased risk of developing recurrent inappropriate blood clots known as thrombi in veins and arteries, such as in deep veins of the legs or lungs.
  • Their presence may indicate syphilis, antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These antibodies can also be related to low platelet count, which is known as thrombocytopenia, and recurrent miscarriages, especially in the second and third trimesters. This is also associated with premature labor and pre-eclampsia.
