Cortisol is a primary stress hormone that provides a protective response to a perceived threat or danger. There are certain diseases, such as Addison’s disease and Cushing’s disease that may affect the production of cortisol in the body. The cortisol test checks the level of cortisol in your blood, urine, or saliva.
It is recommended to:Diagnose Cushing’s syndrome caused due to high cortisol levels. To analyse Addison’s disease. To measure and diagnose conditions of the adrenal glands or pituitary glands.
The Cortisol AM test measures:The levels of the hormone cortisol in the blood.Cortisol is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal glands that help in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It also plays a regulatory role in maintaining blood sugar levels and the water balance of the body. It is also essential for the maintenance of a healthy immune system. The cortisol mainly remains bound to the proteins, and only a small portion remains free and metabolically active. The CRH stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which, in turn, stimulates the production of cortisol from the adrenal glands to increase cortisol levels in the blood.Cortisol levels are regulated by a feedback mechanism. When cortisol levels rise to the required levels, it stops the secretion of CRH, which is generated by the hypothalamus.
You will get the reports within 6 hours after the collection of the blood sample.
The cost of the Cortisol AM test is Rs. 550.
