Cystatin C is a small protein that is produced throughout the body by all cells containing a nucleus and is found in a variety of body fluids, including the blood. It is produced and filtered from the blood by the kidneys and broken down at a constant rate. This test evaluates the amount of Cystatin C in the blood to help analyze kidney function.
When is the Cystatin C test recommended?
It is recommended:If you have any symptoms of kidney dysfunction and/or have a disease or condition that is known to affect kidney function. There is growing evidence from the body that suggests that Cystatin C can be used to detect kidney disease at earlier stages than serum creatinine, which may help facilitate preventive efforts in the elderly people and those with diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease.

This may be requested if you have a known or suspected disorder that affects kidney function, even if you have no symptoms.
