Iron is crucial for producing red blood cells (RBCs) that transport oxygen throughout your body and also support muscle, bone marrow, and organ health. The iron profile test includes a panel of blood tests that evaluate your body’s iron status. Abnormalities in the iron levels in the body can cause serious health problems. Orange Health Labs is here to help you get your iron levels tested.
You are likely to be advised by your doctor to get an iron profile test if you experience symptoms of iron deficiency (pale skin, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, breathlessness, and a fast heartbeat) or iron overload (pain in joints and abdomen, fatigue, and weight loss). Additionally, an iron profile test can also be recommended for further testing of your health. For instance, if your complete blood count shows low haemoglobin and haematocrit levels and your RBCs are smaller in size than usual, you will be advised to perform the iron profile test as these signs are suggestive of iron-deficiency anaemia.
It is recommended:
If you have any symptoms of increased accumulation of iron in the body, like joint pain, abdominal pain, fatigue, or loss of body hair if you have any signs or symptoms of iron deficiency anemia, like pallor, fatigue, weakness, headaches.
If your CBC shows that your hemoglobin and hematocrit are low and your RBCs are smaller and paler than normal, it usually suggests iron deficiency anemia.
The iron profile test essentially includes the assessment of four parameters as follows:
Serum Iron Test: It is a measure of the amount of iron present in the blood.
Total-Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): This measures the total capacity of the proteins in the blood to bind and transport iron. Normal range is: Male: 261 - 462 μg/dL; female: 265 - 497 μg/dL.
Transferrin: This measures the protein transferrin in the body, for which the normal range is 206 - 381 μg/dL.
Transferrin Saturation: It is measured as the serum iron value divided by TIBC; the normal range for which is 16-50%.
