This test can be done to identify the presence of malarial parasites in the blood. Malaria is an infectious disease that is caused by a parasite of the species. It is transmitted through the infected bite of a mosquito. The species that cause malaria in humans include:

When is the Smear for Malarial Parasite test recommended?

It is recommended:

  • If you have any signs or symptoms suggestive of malaria-like fever with shaking chills, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, profuse sweating, headache.
  • As a part of the fever panel.

What does it measure?

The Smear for Malarial Parasite test:

  • Is done to find the presence of the malarial parasite in the blood.
  • Is also used to check the progress of treatment for malaria.
  • Malarial parasites can be identified by examining a blood smear slide under the microscope.
  • A drop of blood is spread on a slide, which is called a smear. This is then stained with a Giemsa stain, which helps by giving the malaria parasite a distinctive appearance.
  • Thin smears help in evaluating the presence of schizonts (a stage of the malarial parasite with the presence of many small nuclei), gametocytes (a stage of the malarial parasite where this can produce more gametes), and pigmentation due to the malarial parasite in the blood.
  • The diagnosis is made by spotting the parasite of malaria or its antigens or its products in the smear.
  • Thick smears help to detect the presence of parasites, while thin smears help to detect the type of parasite.
