Phosphorus is a mineral that is combined with other substances to form organic and inorganic phosphate compounds. The terms are the same. They are often used interchangeably when talking about tests, but it is the amount of inorganic phosphate in the blood that is measured with serum Phosphorus or phosphate test.
It is recommended:To evaluate phosphate levels in cases of bone and kidney diseases. To determine the conditions associated with certain glands like parathyroid glands. It determines the cause of the abnormal levels of vitamin D.To check the levels when taking Phosphorus or calcium supplements.
The Phosphorus test measures:The levels of inorganic phosphates in the blood. This is critical in the production and storage of energy as it forms a part of the energy currency of cells (adenosine, tri, di, and monophosphates). It is essential for the functioning of nerves and muscles and the growth and maintenance of healthy bones. In the blood, phosphates act as a buffer to maintain the pH and electrolyte balance of the body. Most of the phosphates are bound to the calcium in the bones and the teeth. Some of it is found in the muscles and nerves, and a small amount is present in the cells, where it forms a structural component of DNA. Small amounts of phosphate are normally found in circulation and these levels are measured with the serum phosphate test.Phosphate levels in the blood are maintained within their very narrow normal concentration range by the excretion of excess Phosphorus through the kidneys.Phosphate levels are also dependent on the levels of calcium, Vitamin D, and parathyroid hormone in the blood.
The Phosphorus test is prescribed by your doctor after a complete assessment of your symptoms and conditions.
