Thyroid function test is a blood test to assess the functioning of the thyroid gland. It measures three important components:
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
TFT blood tests can aid in diagnosing thyroid dysfunction, which can be caused by factors such as infection (thyroiditis), iodine deficiency or excess iodine, postpartum thyroiditis, autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease, thyroid cancer, pituitary gland dysfunction, and thyroid nodules.

Thyroid Test is recommended:
To check for any suspected thyroid disease (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism).
The parameters tested in a TFT are:
1. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, its main action is coaxing the thyroid gland to produce T4 and T3 hormones. The levels of TSH are usually opposite of thyroid hormone levels. Higher level of TSH means reduced thyroid gland function (hypothyroidism) while lower than normal levels of TSH suggests that the thyroid gland is functioning excessively (hyperthyroidism).
2. Thyroxine T4: Produced in larger quantities than T3, it mainly acts by converting itself into active form T3.
3. Triiodothyronine T3: Although produced in low quantities by the thyroid, it is the most active hormone of the gland. Together with T4, they control very important body, cell, and organ functions.
