In the realm of medical diagnostics, the Widal test serves as a crucial tool for identifying typhoid fever, a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi. Developed by Georges-Fernand Widal in 1896, this serological test detects the presence of antibodies produced by the body's immune system in response to typhoid-causing bacteria, S. typhi.
The Widal test is an indirect agglutination test, meaning it observes the clumping of blood during the test. The Widal test is required for the diagnosis of typhoid. When you consume food or water contaminated by the excrement of a person who has typhoid or is a carrier of typhoid, you can get typhoid and paratyphoid fever. Although the onset of typhoid (enteric) fever is slow, it is a severe infection with symptoms that include fever and worsening fatigue. Paratyphoid fever is a severe infection similar to typhoid infection. It is important to get diagnosed promptly to prevent these fevers from worsening.
The Widal test checks for the presence of two types of antibodies (O and H) against the bacteria in the blood sample. The Widal test results are expressed as either positive or negative test result.
If the Widal test is positive and typhoid or paratyphoid fever is diagnosed, it is advisable to take the test again in the next two weeks based on your clinical conditions and symptoms.
