Antenatal check-ups are a group of tests conducted to diagnose any condition that can identify possible health issues in the developing foetus (the unborn baby) and diagnose any maternal conditions that might impact foetal growth. Pregnancy is an important event in the life of a woman. Although most pregnancies result in normal birth, approximately 15% may develop complications that cannot be predicted. Many of these complications can be prevented by precautionary care such as antenatal check-ups.
You may sometimes come across antenatal packages with different names like prenatal care, gestational care, perinatal care, expectant care and antenatal care (ANC). The main objective of these packages is to support and preserve the health of the expectant mother and her developing child.
The baby’s fitness depends a lot on the mother's health. An exact assessment of the health status of the mother and the foetus must be done in all pregnancies to prevent any future health issues.
The Antenatal test package detects infections like HIV and Syphilis in pregnant women which may be transmitted from the mother to her child. These tests also assess health conditions in the mother such as diabetes or anaemia that could lead to complications in both mother and the child before delivery or even later in his/her life. Moreover, it is found that by introducing antenatal care in the pregnancy journey, maternal mortality due to preventable causes is significantly reduced. Thus, the antenatal tests are not only important for the foetus but also for the expectant mother.
