What is a Direct Bilirubin test?
The bilirubin test measures total bilirubin. Bilirubin is a dark yellow waste product that is primarily created when the body breaks down haemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells (RBC) that carries oxygen. Bilirubin is found in the bile duct, which is fluid in your liver that is involved in digesting food. Most of the bilirubin is eliminated in the faeces or urine. This test looks for bilirubin in your blood or urine

What does it measure?
The Direct Bilirubin test measures:Analyses the amount of bilirubin present in the blood of a person.Bilirubin is an orange-yellow waste pigment that is produced by the normal breakdown of heme. Heme (iron) is a component of haemoglobin that is found in red blood cells. The liver processes the bilirubin, and it is eliminated from the body. Both these forms of bilirubin are checked or estimated, and total bilirubin (sum of direct and in Direct Bilirubin) may be reported. In cases there is an increase in the values of bilirubin, there will be yellowing of the skin and white of the eyes, giving the appearance of jaundice.
How long will the reports take?
You will get the reports within 6 hours after the collection of the blood sample.
