A Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) test evaluates kidney function. The kidney consists of tiny filters called glomeruli that remove waste materials from the blood. The Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) test is an assessment of how well this filtration process is working. There are several methods to test GFR. Most often, the glomerular filtration rate is estimated by analyzing another substance. There are many estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) tests that use a formula based on the levels of creatinine, a waste product produced by the body’s muscles, in the blood.
It is recommended:To evaluate kidney function or diagnose and monitor any kidney disease and its treatment. In cases of diabetes. In cases of high blood pressure. When there is a family history of kidney failure.
The Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate test: Provides a calculation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which reflects how well the kidneys are filtering the blood and is represented in milliliters per minute (mL/min). These results are often listed as milliliters per minute per 1.73 square meters of body surface area (mL/min/1.73m2). In an eGFR test, this rate is not analyzed directly. Instead, it is estimated by analyzing and measuring another substance in the blood. Most often, creatinine is analyzed, and then special formulas calculate eGFR based on the level of creatinine in the blood.Creatinine is naturally produced as a result of the body’s process of supplying energy to the muscles. The kidneys will filter and remove creatinine from the blood. Typically, the amount of creatinine generated is relatively constant, so changes in creatinine levels in the blood can be an indicator of abnormal kidney function. Not everyone produces the same amount of creatinine, which is why eGFR calculators can include factors such as age, sex, height, and ethnicity along with your creatinine values in order to estimate the glomerular filtration rate.
You will get the reports within 6 hours after the collection of the blood sample.
The cost of the Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate test is Rs. 550
The Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate test is prescribed by your doctor after completing the assessment of your condition.
