The Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test is used to measure the amount of glucose (sugar) present in your blood after fasting for a whole night or 8 hours. This test helps in treating individuals with diabetes. The Fasting Blood Sugar test is the most commonly prescribed test for diabetes, and it is the simplest and fastest test.
FBS or Fasting Blood Sugar is very important to diagnose diabetes and assess the function of the pancreas. The levels of sugars in the blood must be maintained for optimal functioning of all cells. Disturbances in maintaining blood sugars can cause low blood sugar.
High blood sugar can result from a variety of causes or risk factors. Firstly, a family history of diabetes can significantly increase the likelihood of developing high blood sugar. Additionally, being overweight or obese is a common risk factor, as excess body fat can interfere with insulin function. A sedentary lifestyle, marked by minimal physical activity, is also associated with elevated blood sugar levels.
Unhealthy eating habits play a crucial role in this condition. Consuming excessive amounts of fast food, sugary drinks, sweets, and oily or fried foods can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels. Furthermore, pregnancies in older individuals, often referred to as elderly pregnancies, can pose an increased risk.
By regularly testing the blood glucose levels, we can identify diabetes and take necessary steps to prevent it from becoming a major health hazard. All residents can now easily get blood sugar test
FBS Test is recommended in the following:
When you detect diabetes mellitus
You screen for high blood sugar in the presence of risk factors for diabetes
You detect diabetes during pregnancy or gestational diabetes
You are monitoring the treatment efficacy in patients who are undergoing treatment for diabetes
Fasting for at least 8 hours prior to the test is a must. A blood glucose test measures only blood glucose level. Medications like hormones, or steroids can alter blood sugar levels. Any history of bleeding disorders should be informed to the eMedics who has come for home sample collection to avoid complications of bleeding.
