About two days after they form, they develop into mature red blood cells. These red blood cells move oxygen from your lungs to every cell in your body.
It is recommended:To check the bone marrow activity to produce red blood cells.To diagnose and distinguish between the different types of anaemia.To determine the cause of the abnormal results appearing in the tests like the complete blood count (CBC), haematocrit test, etc.To analyse the treatment efficacy and recovery of bone marrow activity after chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, treatment for iron deficiency, folate deficiency anaemia, or treatment for renal failure.
The Reticulocyte (Retic) Count test measures:The number of reticulocytes in the blood. If the count is very high or too low, it can be a serious health problem, including anaemia and disorders of the bone marrow, liver, and kidneys. RBCs are produced from the hematopoietic stem cells (stem cells that are a form of blood cell). These stem cells are differentiated to produce the reticulocytes, which are released into the circulation where they eventually form the RBCs.The nuclei of the hematopoietic cells degenerate during their differentiation and maturation into the RBCs. The matured RBCs have no genetic material, but the reticulocytes that are immature RBCs contain some genetic material in the form of RNA.The reticulocyte count test checks the percentage of reticulocytes available in circulation. This helps to determine the ability of the bone marrow to supply the necessary number of RBCs required by the body normally as well as in response to RBC loss due to bleeding.It also helps to diagnose conditions affecting the RBCs as well as those affecting the bone marrow and causing abnormal RBC production.
