What is a Thyroxine (T4) test?
Thyroxine, also called thyroxine T4, is the main form of thyroid hormone made by the thyroid gland. Most of the T4 is bound to proteins, while a small proportion is unbound, or free. Free T4 testing analyses T4 that circulates throughout the blood and is also available to enter body tissues and act upon them. Total T4 testing checks the total amount of T4, including free T4 and T4 that is bound to proteins
When is the Thyroxine (T4) test recommended?
It is recommended:When there is the need to analyse any suspected thyroid diseases (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism). To check the treatment of patients with thyroid diseases. To monitor the T4 levels in patients on thyroid replacement therapy.
What does it measure?
The Thyroxine (T4) test is to measure:The thyroxine test analyses only the active form of the thyroid hormone, which is unbound and can directly enter the cells and affect them. Total T4 testing checks both bound and unbound T4 in the blood. The thyroid hormones are very critical to brain development during infancy and for many essential body processes during adulthood. Usually, the body has a large store of T4 circulating in your blood. However, most of the circulating T4 is bound to proteins and is not available for immediate use by the body. While the total T4 test is a very useful indicator of T4 levels in the presence of normal binding in proteins, it is not useful when levels of binding proteins are increased or decreased.
